The novel is set in the 1st century. The protagonist is Uri, a boy with poor eyesight who lives in Rome and is unable to do manual work. Uri mysteriously becomes part of a delegation carrying the offering money from Rome to Jerusalem. Uri travels from Jerusalem to Judea and then to Alexandria. 2 years after his departure, he returns to Rome. The years then begin to pass more quickly, and by the end of the novel Uri is an old man.
